Scandinavian Major and Minor at BYU

Majoring in Scandinavian Studies

There is currently no official major in Scandinavian Studies, but it is possible to have Scandinavian Studies as a emphasis in the following majors: Humanities, Comparative Literature, and European Studies. Please refer to the individual programs for more information or contact the Scandinavian Studies Program director, Dr. Oscarson.

Minor in Scandinavian Studies

The minor in Scandinaian Studies requires 300-level knowledge of at least one Scandinavian language. Additional requirements are as follows:

  • Complete the prerequisite courses for one of the languages listed below or have equivalent experience.
  • Complete one course from the following:
      Dansh 340.
      Finn 340.
      Iclnd 429.
      Norwe 340.
  • Complete the following:
      Scand 430.
  • Complete 6 hours from the following:
      Scand 344R, 377, 429 (may not be taken by students who have had Iclnd 429), 490R, 491R. Hist 332.
      A literature course in a language different from that taken in item 1 above:
        Dansh 340 (may not be taken by students who have had Norwe 340).
        Finn 340.
        Iclnd 429 (may not be taken by students who have had Scand 429).
        Norwe 340 (may not be taken by students who have had Dansh 340).
        Swed 340.
